In search of happiness, my debut solo show in Melbourne

Words can not describe my excitement for this: I’m having my first ever solo show this November!

This show is a documentation of my journey from when I started to pursue happiness in the form of art making. In this time, I have connected with my friends more, I discovered my alter ego “Yeok”, I have lived a healthier life and I stopped cutting my hair.

Directly reflecting my life, the show is grouped into three sections: Relationship, Self fulfillment and Health.

Relationship

You are who you hang out with. We have different chemistry with every person we spend time with, and the more time we spend with a person, the more we experience those reactions. So – spend more time with the ones who make you feel good is the best way to keep you happy.

Self fulfillment

Fulfillment is one of the things we never stop searching for. Gaining and maintaining fulfillment is a big part of our life long journeys and it should come in healthy doses. If you forget about it for too long, life becomes dull. If you allow it to expand into extreme ego, you might exhaust yourself too early and have nothing left for the rest of your life, or become so used to it that you take good things for granted.

Health

The connection of our body and mind is like a well constructed machine. If you don’t take care of it, everything else becomes irrelevant. We are in a world full of temptation and distraction, new standards of what is thought to be a good life isn’t necessary good for your health. You are the only person who can take care of yourself and know what you need, so listen to yourself.

Both mental and physical health are important in Yeok's work. Her latest painting "Wonderland" explores how consumerism distract us from what's really important and things we do in the hidden background can impact our health in longer term.

The gallery space

I hope to create an environment where you can come in and immerse yourself with strangeness and wonder, keep an open mind and be ready for a delightful experience. Off the Kerb Gallery has a very special place in my heart, and is perfect for this exhibition – not only because the gallery is divided well into three awesome spaces and each has its own personality, gallery director Shini Pararajasingham is a sweet heart. I will be exhibiting in the back gallery where the lighting will help to bring a sense of intimacy into the show. The front gallery will display beautiful works by Sam Yong – he is a talented self taught artist from Auckland, New Zealand.
