Annie Hughes

I came to Botanical Art rather by accident; After my graduating as a Fashion & Textiles Designer I went into the industry and spent the next 16 years working for a couple of Design Studios. In 2005 a colleague invited me to visit “Botanica” at the Botanic Gardens in Sydney and I was instantly smitten by this Art form, and wondered whether I would ever be able to paint like that. Immediately enquiries were made and classes were booked, as many as I could to learn the basic techniques needed for this Art form and its History, I took classes by 5 very well known Artists. My work background has helped me enormously, from the very tight Paisleys and Tartan designs that require minute detail, to the very loose and washy florals used for apparel and swimwear, and large washes needed for bed linen that require the wet-on-wet technique I use to day, but most important of all are the design skills that help me constantly with the composition of paintings. My work has taken me to many exiting exhibitions here and overseas allowing me to meet and interact with a large group of likeminded people.
