Joanna Brownell

Joanna has been painting botanical subjects since 1988. She was a founding member of the Friends of the Botanic Gardens Melbourne Botanical Illustrators Group but has been attending classes at Jenny Phillip’s Botanical Art School of Melbourne for some years. She has exhibited at all but one of the Friends’ The Art of Botanical Illustration exhibitions since their inception in 1992 and has been on the Committee responsible for this exhibition since it started. In 2013 she took over the role of Convener of the Botanical Illustrators Group. In addition, she has taken part in the Government House Florilegium project. Her English background inclines her towards garden flowers rather than Australian natives as subjects for her paintings – but she is extremely interested in all works by botanical artists.
